FOOD FOR THOUGHT
There is no escaping the current media coverage on the virtues of free
range chicken farming, and Essex Farmers Markets have a resident expert
in Ian Chisholm, who owns and runs Chicken Farm, producing free range
eggs from his farm in Norton Heath.
The working life of free range birds is a far cry from that of intensively
farmed battery hens, which spend their lives caged, and without access
to open space, fresh air and light, as Ian explains:
‘Our free range hens have a really happy working life’,
he says. ‘They live in a large barn with clean and dry nest boxes,
their own space and access to food and water all day. During daylight
the hens are free to roam outside in the fields, where they can scratch
about, relax and explore their surroundings. We use a special high-protein
diet because our birds are outside roaming all day and use up much more
energy, which needs to be reflected in their diet. You could say that
an egg is an egg, but with free range there is a real difference in
quality and taste, and of course the eggs are ethically produced.

‘I think many people had lost touch with where their food was
coming from, but they are becoming more aware and making responsible
choices about the source of what they are eating and the lives of the
animals involved. At a farmers market customers are buying direct from
the grower or producer and they can ask questions about how the food
is sourced. They know their purchases are farm fresh, ethically produced
and really good quality. It’s great food without compromise, and
new customers are usually surprised at how reasonable the prices are.’

KICC SHOCKED AT COMMENTS MADE AT MEETING
OF LONDON BOROUGH OF HAVERING PLANNING.
Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) is shocked at the comments
made at the meeting on 15th January, 2008. The Regulatory Services Committee
of the London Borough of Havering raised objections to its application
to build a church and community complex on land at Beam Reach. KICC has
spent £1.8 million on architects, town planning consultants and
other necessary professional planning consultants, to ensure the community
complex and church building will be built to benefit the local community
and meet all the required rules and regulations.

in the area and now attracts approximately 25 million visits a year. The
